What does transporting a pet by air entail?

The transfer of a pet (dog or cat) abroad, by air, can be organized in 3 ways.

Unaccompanied pets, booked as Manifest Cargo

If your pet needs to be transported as Manifest Cargo, AM Pet Movers is your ideal partner and can provide you with full assistance, in all the phases of the relocation. This is our field of expertise.

This service guarantees the safest and best travel conditions for your pet, including tracking tools. Your pet will be traveling unaccompanied, and be transported in the aircraft cargo hold, where the airline will manifest it on board as Special Cargo.

Your dedicated Pet Travel Consultant assigned by AM Pet Movers will take care of carrying out a thorough study of the best route in order to guarantee the safest travel conditions for your pet. Moreover, your consultant will work together with you so as to prepare your dog or cat for their travel.

Pet-in-cabin or Carry-on pets

If the Manifest Cargo solution is not your choice and if you have the possibility, you may consider the Pet in cabin option. Meaning, the pet is traveling with the passenger inside the cabin, as a carry-on luggage.

Letโ€™s go through this process in detail.

The passenger (usually the pet owner) may book this service directly through the airline while purchasing their own ticket.

First of all, it is important to keep in mind that each airline company has its own policy, therefore not all of them may allow pets in cabin, such as most low-cost airlines; there are a few exceptions (foto Matilde in aereo o Anna e Matilde).

Usually, airline companiesโ€™ websites have a specific page dedicated to their pet policy where you can learn all there is to know before planning your trip.

Another important aspect is that, even though an airline may accept pets in cabin, there are some restrictions to comply with, both regarding the weight of the pet (and its kennel) and the dimensions of the kennel itself.

Usually, the total weight of the pet and carrier goes from 8 to 10 kg.

The pet must be able to fit in a soft-sided ventilated pet kennel that will go underneath the seat directly in front of you.

International Pet Relocation

If you are considering booking your pet in cabin, and you are wondering how AM Pet Movers can assist you, the answer is quite easy!

We can provide you with a customized paperwork guidance service. This will allow you to make sure that your pet will be fully compliant with all the requirements, both upon departure and arrival.

We will thoroughly check your petโ€™s paperwork and we will guide you step-by-step in order to make sure everything is in order for its travel.

Excess/checked baggage

The third and last option is the one in which the passenger checks the pet as their excess baggage, in the hold. This is called Excess or Checked baggage.

This is required when the weight of the pet inside its kennel is higher than the maximum allowance according to the airline policy. Just like the pet-in-cabin, the passenger will need to book the pet when purchasing their own ticket.

Since the pet will now travel inside the hold, it is imperative to verify with the airline that the route in question will be served using an aircraft equipped with the pressurized, ventilated and climate-controlled hold.

Also, the kennel that your pet will travel in must now be made of hard-plastic and comply with the IATA requirements.

How can AM Pet Movers assist you in this case?

Besides providing you with customized paperwork guidance, we will also help you choose the correct airline approved kennel for your pet.

We will explain how to measure your dog or cat, and indicate the correct size of kennel.

If needed, you may also purchase the IATA compliant kennel from AM Pet Movers. We will pre-deliver it to your residence, complete with a travel kit (i.e. absorbent pads and bowls).

How does your pet travel?

Here below you may find some basic information:

  • the hold where pets are carried is pressurized, ventilated and climate-controlled. Travel conditions inside the hold are the same as those in the passenger cabin; the temperature inside the hold can vary from +15ยฐC to +25ยฐC, based on the outside temperature, in order to avoid a thermal shock.
  • the hold is monitored by the pilot cockpit, and nobody can access the hold during the flight
  • due to the above-mentioned details, it is important to clarify that not all aircraft types are equipped with this specific hold, therefore the Manifest Cargo option may not be available for all routes
  • the word โ€œcargoโ€ implies that this is an actual export customs procedure from the origin country, which will need to be completed through an import customs procedure in the destination country
  • since we are dealing with live animals and not general cargo, it is crucial to explain that all handling phases (check-in with the airline, tendering, loading onto the aircraft etc.) are carried out through a path exclusively dedicated to our four-legged friends; consequently, live animals are not handled as any other goods being transported by the airline
  • the Manifest Cargo allows the access to a tracking system that shows us the current status of the petโ€™s travel
Dog transport

Dog transport

Relocating a dog abroad requires careful attention and preparation. It is equally important to seek advice from an expert who can recommend the best travel solution, based on the airlines serving your destination.

At AM Pet Movers, we pay close attention to preparing dogs for the journey. Most likely, this will be your dogโ€™s first flight ever โ€” or even the first time it will be confined in a travel crate. Thatโ€™s why it is essential to begin crate-training your dog well in advance.

The crate should become a familiar part of your dogโ€™s daily routine, so that it doesnโ€™t become a source of stress on the day of departure. We also recommend gathering key information and contacts in your destination country, such as veterinary clinics, grooming services, dog parks, and dog-friendly areas.

Make sure to learn about the local regulations regarding dogs, as they can vary significantly from country to country.

Cat transport

Cat transport

Taking a cat abroad is a task that demands care and planning.

Relying on a professional in the field can make a big difference: they can help you select the most suitable travel options and navigate the procedures required by the airlines.

At AM Pet Movers, we also consider your catโ€™s well-being throughout the process, paying particular attention to its preparation for the flight. We know how sensitive a catโ€™s first flight can be, and we strive to make the experience as smooth as possible.

Even if your cat is used to the carrier for vet visits, being confined in it for air travel can still be stressful. Changes in routine are a well-known stress factor for cats.

At AM Pet Movers, we recommend starting to use calming sprays like Feliway inside the carrier, and placing a blanket inside so your cat can wrap itself and feel undisturbed during the flight.

We also suggest gathering useful information and essential contacts in the destination country, such as veterinary clinics, grooming services, and other pet-friendly facilities.

Learning about the local regulations for cats is also crucial, as they can differ greatly from one country to another.

Exotic animal transport

Exotic animal transport

Transporting an exotic animal requires special care and planning.

These animals often fall under CITES categories, meaning they are protected species, and their transport is regulated not only by veterinary and health requirements but especially by permits issued by government authorities in both the country of origin and the destination.

These bureaucratic processes take a long time to complete, so itโ€™s important to begin planning the relocation of exotic animals many months in advance.

It is also extremely important to consult an expert who can guide you through the best transit solutions and assist you with the bureaucratic procedures.

We recommend gathering useful information and essential contacts in the destination country, such as veterinary clinics specialized in exotic species. It’s important to research the local laws regarding pets, which can vary widely from one country to another.
