Pet Passport and Paperwork Guidance

Based on the destination country, shipping a dog or cat abroad may require a long and extenuating paperwork procedure. It is very important to be aware of the entry requirements in force in the various countries, and even more so to know the timing in which said requirements must be obtained.

Let’s start with those commonly known as the minimum veterinary requirements, which are always applicable, and which must be fulfilled before making any arrangements for a pet’s travel.

Said requirements are:

microchip
rabies vaccination
vaccine booklet and/or EU Pet Passport

Besides the above-mentioned requirements, some countries may ask for additional ones, such as vaccinations, parasite treatments, blood tests etc.

Passaport

The EU Pet Passport is an official document recognized in all member countries of the European Union. It is also well accepted in non-EU countries due to its easy-to-read format; this is because all the information it contains is transcribed in two languages: the national language of the issuing EU country and English.

Within the European Union, the category of “Companion Animals,” or pets, includes dogs, cats, and ferrets. Therefore, the European Passport can only be issued exclusively for these animal species.

It is a highly organized document that allows for the recording of all stages of veterinary prophylaxis. Each treatment has a dedicated section, covering rabies vaccination, annual vaccinations, internal antiparasitic treatments, external antiparasitic treatments, rabies antibody titration, and more.

Additionally, it includes a critical section called “CLINICAL EXAMINATION,” where a private or official veterinarian records that the examined animal is in good health. This record enables dogs, cats, or ferrets to travel by air within the European Union without needing additional certifications.

Dog Passport

A dog passport is essential for traveling with your dog, both within and outside the European Union. It allows for identifying the dog and proving that it complies with the required vaccinations and health treatments necessary for entry into various countries.

Before departure, it is crucial to check specific regulations, such as quarantine periods or mandatory preventive treatments.

The passport must be updated by an authorized veterinarian, who records any clinical examinations and fitness certificates required for travel.

Cat passport

To travel abroad with a cat, the passport is an essential document that certifies the cat’s health status and mandatory health treatments, such as rabies vaccination.

It is particularly useful for facilitating airport checks and ensuring compliance with international health regulations.

Before departure, it is important to consult an authorized veterinarian to update the passport and ensure that the cat meets the requirements of the destination country, thus avoiding issues during the trip.

Exotic animal passport

Exotic animals neither require nor can obtain a European passport, as this document is exclusively reserved for domestic or companion animals such as dogs and cats.

Instead of a passport, exotic animals must be accompanied by other documents verifying their origin and identifying details. In many cases, an international health certificate issued by an authorized veterinarian is required.
